Magic And Religion

Magic

True magic is a powerful and mysterious force. Nonetheless, its practitioners operate in secret or with the support of powerful allies. The average peasant has little to no contact with magic in their lives and is even likely to deny belief in it at all. Contradictorily, they live in superstitious fear of it at the same time. In most of Lannent, a healer is still more likely to be chased out of town with pitchforks and torches than invited to tea.

The Source of Magic

If anyone knows the true source of magic in Lannent, they aren't talking. There are many theories, and those who practice the arts speak of a "whisper of power" at the very edge of consciousness. Most magic in evidence is either direct and quietly subtle or blatantly powerful but largely unverifiable. For example, everyone knows that the Guild Wizards of Kardia are capable of great feats of world shattering power. Have you seen it? No. No magician in Lannent can be seen throwing fireballs or summoning dragons or the like, but the rumors of power surface far to often to be merely legends.

Magic is known to draw its strength from the wielder. Those who cast excessively become fatigued and have been known to have significantly shortened lifespans. It can take days to recover the strength necessary to cast even the most subtle magics.

Laws of Magic

Magic Throughout Lannent

Wizardry is an honored profession in Kardia and Guild Wizards are highly respected and feared, with the support of the Crown. Unfortunately, sorcery and witchcraft are banned in Kardia, under penalty of death. How does one tell the difference? Only the Guild Wizards know for sure.

Magic is considered to be heresy on pain of death!

Religion

There are many lands and many religions. Often, the same gods are worshipped by different names or alternate aspects by people of distant lands or right next door. (see Pantheon)
