Geography

Caryadis is on the western coast of the Eastern Continent of Lannent, on the Wydrun Sea. Caryadis claims the north and south shores of the Gulf of Thyresh. To the north is the Sand Sea and the southernmost reaches of the Titan's Wall where it tapers into the sea. East of Carydis are the Principalities of Maltesh and the Slave States.

Politics

Caryadis is ruled by the Ungentum Conclave, which seats 201 of the rich and powerful. The Conclave is controlled by three major factions. The first and most powerful faction is the Priesthood of Ysaeniver. The Priesthood has domiated Caryadis politics for over 3000 years. The other factions consider very carefully before opposing the priesthood on any legislation. The second most powerful faction in the Conclave are the Salisem, the Spice Merchants. The minority faction is composed of several of the ancient ruling families of Caryadis who have no direct link to the Priesthood. Collectively, this group is called the Regneuum.

History

Caryadis once dominated the Southern Reaches of the Eastern Continent of Lannent. According to historical documents at the Temple of Ysaeniver, it was originally founded on the shores of the Gulf of Thyresh 3643 years ago by the three chosen heroes of Ysaeniver, known collectively as the Rya'di. The name Caryadis, in fact, translates as the "lands belonging to the Rya'di".

Caryadis soon reached from the Titan's Wall to the Southern Wastes and across the entirety of the continent from the Wydrun Sea to the borders of the Sand Sea and the Dragon Spine.

Virtually as soon as the Empire stopped expanding, it began to decline. Increasing religious authoritarianism and sectarian idealism led to nearly a dozen wars of succession and fragmentation, resulting in the formation of the Freestates of Thyresh and several other nations. The Freestates of Thyresh have since further fragmented into the Prinipalities of Maltesh and the Slave States.

Religion and Magic

The Priesthood of Ysaeniver forms one of the three major ruling bodies of Caryadis. The worship of Ysaeniver is compulsory. The Priesthood maintains that many foreign dieties are actually bastardized aspects of Ysaeniver, though salvation can only be earned through the rightous and proper worship of Ysaeniver. Many other gods and goddesses are simply false.

Note: Heresy in Caryadis carries the death sentence. There are, nonetheless, a number of underground cults that have varying degrees of power in Caryadis. Some of these worship the dieties of other nations, or pay more homage to them than is strictly allowed. A few are unique to Caryadis. Among these are the Cult of the Dragon, the Keepers, and the Brotherhood of Olkan.
