Job

I have been approved to hire a Summer Intern in ABC Pharmacology for the purpose of learning our current techniques in Micro-CT imaging and then utilizing that knowledge to expand our capabilities into new models.

The analysis of bone damage by Micro-Computed Tomography has become very important for determination of efficacy in numerous models of arthritis. We have been utilizing this technology in house for 2 years. Now, virtually every project critical arthritis package includes data from Micro-CT imaging. We continue to expand our capabilities in the area of bone imaging at ABC.

Currently, there are numerous exploratory and method development proposals that are not being pursued due to time constraints and limits on trained personnel who, at this time, only devote a fraction of their time to the imaging lab.

At present there are numerous samples from rodent arthritis models which are "on ice" as non-critical for project advancement, but nonetheless would provide a great deal of opportunity to examine the biology of the models themselves. There is a Rat Ovariectomy model which will require extensive validation by Micro-CT to establish scanning parameters and regions of interest to advance. We have been exploring the possibility of using a contrast agent to scan cartilage and establish analysis parameters for the osteoarthritis models.

An intern recruited specifically for the Imaging Lab will be required to handle and process ex vivo samples for scanning, utilize computer imaging software to generate qualitative and quantitative results, and tabulate, prepare, and present results for numerous projects and models.

The is a summer internship position, extending approximately three months, beginning in May. Pay rate is set by HR based on past experience and education. Undergraduate to doctorate students welcome.

If you are or know someone who would be interested in this position, please email your CV and cover letter to shaughn.bryant @ abbott.com

Please Note: [We are not currently looking to hire for a full time imaging position, but past interns HAVE frequently gone on to full time positions at ABC] [This description represents an ambitious list of possible directions that can be pursued by an intern in this position. Depending on skill level and learning curve, an intern may be able to pursue only a few of these objectives, or may simply end up scanning piles of backlogged samples.]
