MIDI Control

A convenient side-effect of using off-the-shelf soundcards for digital audio is that most come equipped with MIDI ports. Software was written to allow MIDI program changes to be sent out over one of these ports. This allows for the SMSurround system to automatically configure and dynamically control digital signal processing units such as the Ensoniq DP-4, which is often used to give reverb effects, etc., to live voices. This is very convenient, as it is one less thing an audio designer must remember to do by hand when running a show. In instances where the effect on a source must switch often, this type of control becomes incredibly useful, and allows for things that are impossible to do manually to be done simply.
