X was a bit more difficult to get running. The Portege uses a NeoMagic chipset for video. Until recently, NeoMagic was unwilling to provide documentation for their chipset to XFree86. Recently, with the help of Red Hat, these specs have been made public and the NeoMagic drivers are being distributed.
Debian provides a packaged version of the Red Hat neomagic driver. I used the generic set of x servers and fonts from Debian and also selected the neomagic package. It works well with this machine, given the right XF86Config file.
