Many Small Functions was founded in 1994 by Josh Brandt and Joe Devlin. Since then, the style has evolved and the lineup expanded. Currently, Many Small Functions is Josh Brandt, Joe Devlin, Steve Richardson, and Noah Vawter. Many pieces of technology also play important roles.

Many Small Functions plays improvised electronic music. The style depends on mood and venue; the first WPI IndieFest show was frantic and fast-paced. Some recordings are ambient to the point of being soporific. Others are frenetic and layered with complex rhythms. Many Small Functions is difficult to categorize.
