When A Battered Person Calls For Emergency Shelter

Here are some things to ask:

Are you safe right now?

Can you go to a safe place and call back?

Where are you?

At home? At the hospital? At a friend's house?

Are you alone?

What's your NAME?

Are you OK?

How hurt are you? Do you need medical attention?

Have you called the police?

Do you want to? Are you able to?

Can you get to safety?

Do you have transportation? Money? Does you have a safe place to stay tonight? (Family? Friends?)

For shelter workers, ask:

Have you been to the shelter before? If you aren't coming tonight, will you call in the morning for counseling or assistance?

IF THE PERSON HAS DECIDED TO LEAVE, HERE ARE SOME THINGS THEY WILL (OR MAY) NEED:

If they are still in the home, these can be hidden or stored at a friend's house until they are ready to leave. If they have left, they can request a police escort to go back and pick up the items.
